Antistatic Materials for Semiconductors: Evaluation at Low Humidity

SHIELD

For semiconductor consumables and electronic packaging, antistatic material evaluation needs a defined environment and specimen condition. A single room-condition resistance result does not establish performance at low humidity, on another substrate or after cleaning.

Separate resistance from charging behavior

EOS/ESD Association identifies material, contact and separation, and humidity among the factors in charging. Low-charging behavior cannot be inferred from resistance alone. A useful evaluation separates resistance measurements from charging under representative handling conditions.[1][2]

Comparable specimen conditions

A proposed comparison uses the same substrate lot, pretreatment and film-formation conditions, with separate records for ambient and agreed low-humidity exposure. A change in film thickness, resin grade or cure conditions creates a new specimen revision. The project parties should agree the humidity and conditioning duration for the intended application.

Material screening and component acceptance

Flat specimens support material comparisons; contact areas, curvature and the grounding path need component-level evaluation. Material enquiries can start with the substrate, electrical target, optical requirements and drying conditions. This defines the sample scope before component validation. No universal pass value is specified here; acceptance depends on the agreed method and specification.
